Many caregivers think that taking time for themselves to rest or have fun with their friends makes them selfish because there is someone who needs them 24/7. This is absolutely not the case! Caring for yourself is the most important—and often the most forgotten—thing you can do as a caregiver.
I was talking with a friend of mine about her father. He doesn’t have dementia, but he just isn’t as sharp as he used to be. Obviously, my friend is sad about this and worried that she too will lose her mental acuity as she gets older. When I explained that she could actually get SMARTER with age, she was surprised.

We’ve seen our stress levels skyrocket as a society as we take on more at home and in the office. Our culture has answered this challenge by getting less sleep. Some think it’s a badge of honor. But trying to get through your life without enough rest (sleep macho) is nothing to be proud of.
