Did you know that most hip fractures are caused by falls? You are at risk for falls if you don’t have strong stabilizer muscles – those are your core muscles. I have spent decades on the front lines of health and healing. In this video I show you some exercises to help you develop good balance so that you never walk like an old person. These are simple exercises that you can do while you are in the shower, putting on your make-up or even standing in line at the grocery store. Get ready to stand up for this one!

Always enjoy your health tips. I have been a massage therapist for over 20 years and your messages are a good reminder for me (even though I know this stuff and have always encouraged my clients to do stretches, etc.). With so much happening in our lives, we get distracted from our self care, and this helps me get back to ‘center’.
You’re the best!! Thanks
This excercise is so important! I walk around with my mother every day and sometimes realize how i start walking like her; very slow and small steps; and now i realized i can´t stand on one foot for one second!
I have also read that you should be able to work up to 30 seconds standing on one leg with your eyes closer. Most of my younger colleagues can do it easily, but I cannot. I plan to work on this! Thank you, Dr. Northrup, for all you do.
“I don’t survive, I thrive.”
I balance on one foot for the duration of my electric toothbrush, and then run it again and do the other foot (because who does one thing at a time anymore). I’ve been doing this to build and keep my bone health. I’m 46 and didn’t realize how difficult balance can get as we age. I’m glad to know this now and plan to keep it up after reading and watching this.
Wondering why it is so much easier with eyes open?
Thanks I was amazed I had balance issues even after roller blading for 20+ years. I did not know this!!!! Thanks I will begin and then I bet I can do tree pose!
I love you
You are right on! I’ve been recuperating for a few months for my knees .
My strength in arms and legs is shockingly less.
I’m doing this and swimming.
A huge thank you for reminding me what to do about it!!

Have balance problems and going to therapy for it, will try your lifting one foot, like the idea that it can be done anywhere, anytime.
This message came to me when I was suffering from pain on my legs after I stopped running for several months
due to meniscus surgery on one knee. How appropriate and beneficial for me right now.
What a great exercise, I am going to practice every day.
Thank You!
Thanks . This is great. I find it much easier with my eyes open, is that helpful too?
Yes, it is easier with our eyes open and I don’t know why. That’s why she suggests we do it with our eyes closed.
10 seconds! Not bad for a woman of 62 (but my left knee protested). LOL
Thank you for sharing this! I am a yoga teacher and have been playing with yoga balancing poses with my older students. I love this idea to balance whenever you can. I can’t wait to hear what my co-workers will say when they see me balancing at the copier.
I am going to try it! I never realized how important this can be!!
This is great. I am sending to my Dad!
