Palpitations: A Message from Your Midlife Heart

As you know, we celebrate Heart Health in February. My wish is that you live your life with heart, passion, and joy. Not only will be you happy—and a pleasure to be with—you will flood your cardiovascular system with life-enhancing nitric oxide. This enriches the health of the endothelial lining of your cells and floods them with oxygen and nutrients. Viagra causes a similar rush of nitric oxide, by the way. So if you want to feel sexy or to enhance your libido, instead of searching for a pill or something outside of yourself, figure out what lights you up on the inside! Then go for it! Make this the year you live with passion—with heart. Learn to dance or take up another kind of new hobby, career, or form of exercise you’ve been longing to try. This is one of the best ways you can support your heart.

Palpitations: A Message from Your Midlife Heart

There’s no question that heart palpitations at menopause are related to changing hormones. However, my experience has been that in many midlife women heart palpitations are primarily from increasing heart energy trying to get in and be embodied in a woman’s life. At midlife our hearts and bodies often become increasingly sensitive to those things that don’t serve us, including caffeine, refined carbohydrates, aspartame, alcohol, or monosodium glutamate, all of which may over stimulate our hearts. You also might need to avoid scary, violent, or emotionally draining news, movies, books, or individuals. Your heart may also be telling you it’s time to pay attention to your deepest desires or what your heart is longing to express.

The Wisdom of Menopause—Newly Revised

Rekindling Libido: Tips from The Wisdom of Menopause

On January 3, 2102, the newest version of The Wisdom of Menopause, was released. I updated it to include my current advice and the latest research on topics that are important to you. Of course that means sex!

One of the sections in this chapter is called “Ten Steps to Rekindling Libido.” I provide very concrete steps you can take to ramp up your desire—and I think some may surprise you. Here is tip #7 on Body Image. I would love to hear what you think! Leave me a message on Facebook.

Body Image

Patricia Love, M.D., author of Hot Monogamy, describes body image as “your inner image of your outer self.” Many women don’t feel good about their bodies because we’ve learned to compare ourselves with the air-brushed, perfect models we see in the media. This is especially true when our bodies start changing at midlife. When we feel bad about our bodies, it is very difficult to be fully present for lovemaking.

Here’s the good news: men don’t care nearly as much as you think. I’ve asked dozens of them. They just want a woman who wants them and who is fun to be with.

If body image is a problem for you, stand in front of a mirror twice a day for thirty days, look deeply into your own eyes, and say out loud, “I accept myself unconditionally right now.” Spend time admiring yourself in the mirror—an exercise that works especially well when the room is lit by candlelight. The more you do this, the more illuminated you will feel. This may sound silly, but it works—and it can instantly point out to you the areas in your life that need love and compassion. The more you enjoy your body yourself, the more erotic you’ll feel. Feeling sexy starts as an inside job with your thoughts and beliefs.

There is a lot of new material about sex and sexuality in The Wisdom of Menopause. In fact, I devoted an entire chapter, called “Sex and Menopause: Myths and Reality,” to answering your questions and concerns. Many, many women experience the best sex of their life at midlife and beyond. I want you to be one of them!
